West Swindon is the large, mainly residential expansion of the town built from the 1970s onwards, a network of villages-style neighbourhoods — Toothill, Freshbrook, Shaw, Middleleaze, Grange Park, and others — linked by landscaped roads and cycleways. It is family-focused suburban Swindon, with its own district centre, retail parks, schools, and green corridors.
The jewel of West Swindon is Lydiard Park, a 260-acre country estate on the western edge of the town. At its heart is Lydiard House, a Grade I listed Palladian mansion, alongside a restored Georgian walled garden, the medieval St Mary's Church, ornamental lake, woodland walks, and a visitor centre and cafe. It is one of Swindon's most popular days out and a favourite for weddings, dog walks, and family picnics.
West Swindon also has strong practical amenities: the West Swindon District Centre with its shops and library, the Link Centre (a major leisure complex with pools, an ice rink, and sports halls), and easy access to junction 16 of the M4 for commuting towards Bristol and the west. The Great Western Hospital and Swindon's main business parks are within easy reach.
The area is known for its abundant green space and its public art trail — a series of sculptures dotted through the neighbourhoods that has become a distinctive feature of West Swindon.
