Swindon Town Centre

Swindon town centre is the modern commercial and shopping hub, sitting below Old Town and grew up around the Great Western Railway works from the mid-19th century onwards. It is the main destination for high-street shopping, chain restaurants, offices, and transport connections.

The Brunel Centre is the heart of town-centre shopping, with more than 100 stores, cafes, and eateries under cover, named after the GWR engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Around it, Regent Street and The Parade form the main pedestrianised shopping streets, mixing national retailers with independents, market stalls, and food outlets. Wharf Green and Canal Walk provide open public space, cafes, and the town's events area. Rising above it all is the David Murray John Tower, the town's tallest building and its most recognisable modern landmark.

The town centre is the transport hub for the whole borough. Swindon railway station, on the GWR main line, connects to London Paddington in under an hour, as well as Bristol, Cardiff, Bath, and the West. The bus station at Fleming Way and multiple town-centre car parks — including the large Brunel multi-storey — put the shops within easy reach.

Cultural venues cluster here too: the Wyvern Theatre at Theatre Square hosts touring shows, music, and comedy, and the Museum of Computing — the UK's first dedicated museum of computing history — is nearby. Regent Circus adds a cinema and a cluster of chain restaurants.
