Highworth is a small historic market town on a hilltop about seven miles north-east of Swindon town centre, within the Borough of Swindon. It has kept a distinct, self-contained identity: a genuine market-town High Street of independent shops, pubs, and cafes, built around a market square and the medieval parish Church of St Michael.
Highworth received its market charter in the 13th century and grew as a trading centre for the surrounding farmland on the Wiltshire–Oxfordshire border. Its elevated position gives long views across the upper Thames valley, and its stone-built centre — much of it a conservation area — makes it one of the most attractive corners of the borough.
Today Highworth serves both as a commuter town for Swindon and as a local hub for the surrounding villages. The High Street supports a good range of independent traders — butchers, bakers, delis, gift shops, hairdressers, and traditional pubs — alongside everyday essentials. The town has an active community life with regular events, including a well-known Christmas fair and summer festival.
